Paul Cullen, a 36-year-old man, admitted damaging an offertory box in St Mary's Church in Edenderry on 22 September 2021 and also pleaded guilty to entering Foy's in the town as a trespasser in October 2020. He was found in possession of three screwdrivers when arrested, and the amount of money in the box was between €6 and €10. Appearing before Tullamore District Court in October 2022, he was sentenced by Judge Andrew Cody to two months' imprisonment. Cullen had 103 previous convictions, including a 12-month prison sentence for theft in 2020.
