Paul Corbett, 37, of Nenagh, Co Tipperary, was sentenced at Portlaoise District Court to two months in prison, suspended for two years, for an assault on a woman in Portlaoise on 12 September 2021. The man kicked and punched the woman and told her her children would find her upstairs with her throat slit, leaving her with bruising across her chest and legs. The defence said he had been under considerable pressure and had drunk too much, and noted he had undergone therapy and anger management programmes. Judge Andrew Cody described the incident as horrific but handed down the suspended sentence.
