latest first- File sent to DPP over death after Garda interaction in Dublin Death after interaction with gardaí · Co. Dublin
Paul Butler, a 51-year-old man from Phibsborough, Dublin, died in Mater Hospital on 18 August 2025 after suffering head injuries when he fell and struck his head on concrete during an interaction with gardaí outside the Holiday Inn on O'Connell Street in the early hours of 15 August 2025. The involved Garda denies pushing Butler, claiming he attempted to catch him as he fell, and was suspended from duty before being arrested and questioned by Fiosrú on 26 August 2025, after which he was released without charge. Fiosrú, the Garda Ombudsman, conducted a criminal investigation under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, making two witness appeals and obtaining CCTV footage. On 20 August 2026, Fiosrú sent its completed investigation file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, with the Butler family notified and the case now awaiting direction from the DPP.
