An off-duty garda spotted Paul Boyle, a 45-year-old Scottish man, taking up-skirt photographs of a woman on the Luas in Dublin on 16 December 2019, and around 40,000 images were found on his phone. A follow-up search of his home in Dublin 18 uncovered over half a million images on a flash drive, including a 15-minute child pornography video of an eight-year-old child first identified in 2002. Boyle was brought to Dundrum Garda Station, questioned, and made no admission. In March 2022 he pleaded guilty to harassment and possession of child pornography, and on 8 July 2022 Judge Martin Nolan sentenced him to three years for harassment and five years for possession of child pornography, with the final two and a half years suspended and backdated to March 2021.
