Patrick Smith, a 75-year-old man from Ashfield East, Kilkenny, was observed by gardaí on New Building Lane, Kilkenny, on 18 September 2023. Gardaí say he handed over €180 of cannabis when they said they would search him, and a later search found cocaine and cannabis wraps. He was also charged with illegal possession of drugs on 9 September 2023, and he was charged with three counts of illegal possession and two counts of having drugs for sale or supply. At Kilkenny District Court he was given a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, with conditions including engagement with the Probation Service and a drugs awareness course, and a destruction order was made for the seized drugs.
