On 20 November 2024 at 9.15pm, an 18-year-old woman working alone at the Circle K filling station in Caherdavin, Limerick city, was approached by a man who demanded cash at knifepoint and left with €90 and a set of keys. A taxi driver flagged down a passing garda car and identified the robber, and gardaí arrested Patrick Shanahan, 37, of McGarry House Homeless Accommodation, Alphonsus Street, Limerick city, who is from County Tipperary. Shanahan pleaded guilty to robbery and production of a box cutter knife, and on 29 June 2025 Judge Colin Daly jailed him for two and a half years, backdated to 21 November 2024. The judge adjourned for three weeks his decision on whether to activate all or part of a suspended sentence, which is the latest development.

On 16 August, gardaí were called to an altercation in Alphonsus Street, Limerick City, in which a person suffered a fractured jaw. Patrick Shanahan, 35, who was described as homeless, was charged with assault and was willing to plead guilty only if the case stayed in the district court. By 9 September 2023 Judge Patricia Harney had refused to hear the assault matter and sent it to the circuit court, where higher penalties can be imposed. At the same hearing Shanahan was sentenced to jail for public order offences and abuse of gardaí, theft, and failing to appear in court, and the assault case now goes to the circuit court.
