Patrick (Pat) Linehan, a 70-year-old Irish man, was caught in a sting operation following sexualised conversations with two online profiles he believed were 11 and 12-year-old girls, which were actually controlled by adults posing as children. The message threads ran from 19 June to 8 July 2023, and gardaí were called to his home in Cork on 8 July 2023, when a member of the Child Online Protection Enforcers group handed them two USB devices containing the conversations. Linehan pleaded guilty to using technology to interact with children for the purpose of sexual exploitation and to arranging to meet a child for the purpose of sexual assault. In July 2025, Judge Helen Boyle at Cork Circuit Criminal Court jailed him for three and a half years, suspending the final 18 months.
