  • Ardee Garda murder remembered on 40th anniversary Murder (shooting) · Co. Louth

On 27 June 1985, two men ambushed the manager at the Labour Exchange in Ardee, Co Louth, and stole £25,000 in cash. Garda Sergeant Patrick Morrissey, from Belturbet, Co Cavan, pursued the robbers on foot and was first wounded by a gunshot before Michael McHugh approached the unarmed sergeant and shot him in the head. McHugh was identified as the gunman. On the 40th anniversary in 2025, a memorial mass is planned at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Belturbet, and a quilt panel by the South East Fermanagh Foundation honours Morrissey.
