latest first- Man sentenced to life for machete murder in Clonsilla, Dublin Murder · Co. Dublin
In the early hours of 25 July 2020, Patrick McDonagh, a 52-year-old man, attacked his elderly neighbour Peter McDonald, a 73-year-old man, with a machete and knife at McDonald's home on Whitechapel Road, Clonsilla, Dublin 15. McDonagh was arrested after a standoff with armed gardaí and charged with murder; he pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to manslaughter, a plea the State rejected. After a fitness-to-stand-trial hearing in May 2022, a two-week trial at the Central Criminal Court concluded in February 2024 when a jury unanimously found McDonagh guilty of murder, rejecting the defence of diminished responsibility. On 14 February 2024, Mr Justice Michael MacGrath sentenced McDonagh to the mandatory term of life imprisonment.
