  Patrick Joseph Bardon, a man in his mid-50s who was a teacher of English, was convicted of 11 charges of oral rape of one of his male students, who was aged 15 when the offending began, on dates between October 1992 and March 1994. Following a six-day criminal trial, Bardon was given a 10-year prison sentence with the final two years suspended in October 2023 and is currently serving it at Midlands Prison in Portlaoise. He was assessed as being at a moderate risk of reoffending and had no previous convictions. In June 2025, a Teaching Council inquiry found his offending fundamentally incompatible with the teaching profession and struck him off the register, barring him from reapplying to teach for 20 years.
