Karen Guinee, a 23-year-old newly qualified doctor from Douglas, Cork, was sexually assaulted, strangled and beaten to death by her boyfriend Patrick 'Pa' Hogan in their shared flat in Galway City between June 11 and 12, 2006. Hogan was on bail from 2006 to 2008 before admitting the murder and being sentenced to life in prison in 2008. He has applied for parole on multiple occasions, with the family attending parole hearings repeatedly to keep him behind bars. As of June 2025, Hogan is applying for parole again, and Karen's sister Laura Guinee-Crowley issued a statement on the 19th anniversary of the murder.
