James O'Neill, a 57-year-old man (one report gives 75), assaulted his neighbour Patrick Hansard with a shovel in a stairwell near Hansard's home in Dublin in the early hours of 17 August 2019, wearing a V for Vendetta-style mask. Hansard, then 73, suffered skull fractures, a cervical spine fracture and a traumatic brain injury. O'Neill was convicted by a jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in 2024 and sentenced to 11½ years by Judge Elva Duffy, reduced from a 13-year headline. O'Neill is now appealing the severity of his sentence at the Court of Appeal, which has reserved judgment.
