  Between October 1992 and March 1994, Patrick Bardon, a former teacher, sexually abused a teenager he had befriended through a local pitch and putt club, at Bardon's then home in Ferbane, County Offaly. The teenager was 15 to 17 at the time. In June 2023, a Central Criminal Court jury sitting in Longford convicted Bardon of 11 counts of oral rape. On 16 October 2023, Mr Justice David Keane imposed a 10-year sentence with the final two years suspended, from a headline sentence of 12 years, and ordered two years of post-release supervision. The complainant, now 46, had waived his anonymity to help other victims of sexual abuse.
