latest first- Son of 1974 Dublin-Monaghan bombing victim seeks High Court challenge over Garda information refusal Judicial review (refusal to provide information regarding murder) · Co. Dublin
On 17 May 1974 a car bomb went off in Monaghan town, grievously wounding Patrick Askin, who later died; earlier that day three car bombs had exploded in Dublin city centre, and 33 people were killed in total. The Justice for the Forgotten campaign was set up in 1996 to seek truth and justice for the victims. In April 2021 the Garda Commissioner announced the force could not hand over relevant files to Operation Denton. In October 2024 Mr Askin's son, also Patrick and from Armagh, sought a High Court challenge, saying the Garda Commissioner and Minister for Justice had refused to give the Office of the Police Ombudsman of Northern Ireland intelligence on the bombings, and Ms Justice Gearty deferred the application and adjourned it to November 2024.
