Patricia Stapleton, a 75-year-old woman from Borris, Carlow, was convicted of careless driving after her SMax crossed the white line and collided with another car near the Lyrath Estate in Purcellsinch, Kilkenny, on 7 August 2025. Both drivers were seriously injured, with Stapleton suffering a brain bleed, neck fracture, collapsed lung and fractured breast bone, while the other driver sustained an arm laceration, spleen injury and fractured breast bone. A 15-year-old passenger in the other car had minor bruising but no serious injuries. Stapleton pleaded guilty at Kilkenny District Court and was fined €700 and disqualified from driving for one year.
