A horse was found in the highest level of suffering, with no food or water available, at Kildoon, Nurney, Co. Kildare, on 24 February 2020 after a passer-by reported it to gardaí. The horse, which had protruding ribs, a prolapsed penis and cardiac disease, was put down after a veterinary examination. Pat Hayes, a 40-year-old man and Curragh-based trainer, was charged with animal neglect under the Animal Health and Welfare Act. He first appeared at Naas District Court in September 2020, was sent forward for trial, and pleaded not guilty at Naas Circuit Court where a jury convicted him. In December 2021, Judge Gerard Griffin sentenced Hayes to a three-month suspended prison term and ordered him to pay €5,000 to Kildare Animal Foundation.
