In the early hours of 23 August 2017, Pat Barry, a 65-year-old retired stable-hand, was found by Gardaí in his car at a secluded car-park at McNamara Lake, O'Briensbridge, south east Clare, with a 15-year-old girl with an intellectual disability and a box of Viagra tablets in the glove compartment. The girl made a complaint of sexual assault to Gardaí that same night. Barry denied the assault in two Garda interviews before pleading guilty to a single count of sexual assault. On 22 November 2022, Judge Francis Comerford at Ennis Circuit Court sentenced him to 20 months in prison, suspending the final nine months.
