On 13 February 2019, Owen Flynn, a Garda, was working a night shift at Ballymahon Garda Station when the events at the centre of the case took place. Flynn, a man, was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice and with forging two signatures in his official Garda notebook, in the investigation of an underage sex case. He was tried at Longford Circuit Court before Judge Jonathan Dunphy and a jury of 12 over 12 days, and the jury deliberated for four hours and 46 minutes. In June 2025 the jury returned not guilty verdicts on both counts, which is the latest development.
