Mahamud Ilyas, a 22-year-old Somali man from Blanchardstown, was beaten to death with a hammer and kicked at a house in Verdemont, Blanchardstown, on 9 December 2022, allegedly after a row over a stolen bag of cannabis, and his body was wrapped in a carpet and dumped in a field at Belgree Lane, Kilbride, Co Meath, where it was found on 10 December. Viorel Doroscan, 23, a Romanian man, and Otniel Richardo Clejan, 24, a Romanian man, were arrested on 4 January 2023 and charged with murder, while co-accused Lorenzo Cantaragiu, 21, and Robert Burns, 59, face charges of impeding the prosecution. The trial at the Central Criminal Court before Mr Justice Tony Hunt concluded on 20 May 2025 when a jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict against Doroscan and Clejan, rejecting their self-defence case. The jury will continue deliberations on Cantaragiu's impeding prosecution charges.
