  • Former swimming coach jailed for 15½ years for indecent assault in Dublin Indecent assault · Co. Dublin

    George Gibney, a 78-year-old Irish former national and Olympic swimming coach, was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury in July 2026 of 39 counts of indecent assault and one count of attempted rape of four girls, including Orla Poole, aged between eight and 15 at the time. The alleged abuse took place at various locations in south Dublin, including Glenalbyn swimming pool in Stillorgan and Newpark Sports Centre in Blackrock, between 1971 and 1981. Gibney was arrested in Florida in July 2025 on an Irish extradition warrant, extradited to Ireland, and charged with 79 offences; he pleaded guilty to five counts at the start of his trial. On 12 October 2026, Judge Mícheál O'Higgins sentenced him to 15 years and six months in prison.
