On 21 August 2018, Dean Boland, a 37-year-old man, allegedly broke into a downstairs apartment at Oaklands Terrace, Terenure, Dublin, stole a rucksack, and set fire to the property. Ohari Viera, a man from Angola, was living in the upstairs apartment with two other men; all three evacuated but Viera re-entered the building and was later found by fire service officers, dying of cardiac arrest from smoke inhalation at St James' Hospital. Boland was arrested and charged the following day, convicted by a Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jury in December 2022 of manslaughter, arson, and burglary, and sentenced to eight years in prison in March 2023. The Court of Appeal allowed his appeal against the manslaughter conviction on 7 October 2025.
