latest first- Man given probation for assault in Sligo Assault · Co. Sligo
In the early hours of 11 March 2018, 22-year-old Ogaga Nwagiriga, a pharmaceutical student at IT Sligo, was subjected to racist abuse by 28-year-old Polish man Bartosz Zukowski at the Garavogue Bar in Sligo, after which Nwagiriga followed Zukowski outside and struck him. Zukowski, who was treated for a triceps tendon rupture, made a complaint at Sligo Garda Station two days later. Nwagiriga, who came to Ireland as a young child from Nigeria, pleaded guilty to assault at Sligo Circuit Court. In October 2022, the court applied the Probation Act and directed Nwagiriga to pay Zukowski €3,000 in compensation, with the judge describing the racism Nwagiriga experienced as abhorrent.
