• Man sentenced for two counts of indecent assault in Galway Indecent assault (two counts) · Co. Galway

Francis McCann, a 79-year-old man from Gort, County Galway, indecently assaulted his nieces Áine and Nuala McCann, both born in Belfast in 1969, when they were around 11 and 12 in the family home. The sisters' father, Joe McCann, had been shot dead by British soldiers in Belfast in 1972, and the family moved to Gort in 1981 to live with their aunt's family. McCann initially denied two charges of indecent assault but pleaded guilty on the second day of his trial at Galway Circuit Criminal Court in March 2024, six years after the Garda investigation began. He was sentenced to 14 months' imprisonment for one charge and eight months for the other, running concurrently.
