  • Man sentenced to seven years for rape of sister in Cork Rape; oral rape; sexual assault · Co. Cork

John Paul Hegarty, a man aged 41, was convicted by a jury in October 2021 of 19 counts of rape, one count of oral rape and four sexual assaults for repeatedly raping his sister Nora Hegarty, a woman now 35, over a three-year period in the 1990s at their family home in Glanmire, Co Cork. Nora, who was aged between nine and 12 at the time, reported the abuse to gardai on her 30th birthday. A jury of nine women and three men found him guilty at a Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork, and he was found not guilty of a 25th count of anal rape. In January 2022, Ms Justice Deirdre Murphy sentenced him to eight years' imprisonment with the final year suspended, with a further three years for the sexual assaults to run concurrently.
