Kamran Waris, a 32-year-old Indian man, attacked fellow chef Noman Shiakh with silver tongs in the kitchen of The Spicy Grill in Ramelton, Donegal, on 13 February 2021, during a row over who was the better cook. Waris was interviewed by gardaí on 21 February and the case was heard at Letterkenny Circuit Court, where the judge described it as a serious assault with a weapon and reduced the sentence to 12 months after mitigation. The judge ordered Waris to pay €2,000 to his victim and said no custodial sentence would be imposed if the compensation was paid, adjourning the matter for one year. After the balance was paid, the judge was satisfied the order had been met and Waris was allowed to walk free.
