latest first- Electrician sentenced for Data Protection Act breach in Dublin Criminal breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 (disclosing personal data without authorisation) · Co. Dublin
Noel Shannon, a 40-year-old electrician, took photographs of a Garda intelligence board at Kilmainham Garda station on 13 March 2019 and sent them to two other people, who circulated them on social media, exposing the personal information of 108 people. Gardaí became aware in late March 2019 and obtained a search warrant for Shannon's home, seizing electronic devices including the phones of Shannon and his partner. Shannon pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to disclosing personal data without prior authorisation, in what was the first criminal breach of the Data Protection Act 2018 prosecuted on indictment. On 17 December 2021, Judge Melanie Greally imposed a two-year sentence suspended in full for two years, following a headline sentence of three years.
