Noel Byrne, a 23-year-old man from Carlow, was convicted at Kilkenny District Court of two offences under the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act. The court heard that on 4 March 2025 he induced a man to take €500 out of his bank account at an ATM for work he did not do, and on 21 March 2025 he induced a different man to write two cheques for €450 each. Two elderly men had also been made to pay a total of €1,400 for work that was never done. He had been held on remand since 7 April, and on 27 May 2025 he was sentenced to seven months on each charge, to run consecutively, 14 months in total.
