• Man sentenced for coercive control and assault in Carlow Coercive control · Co. Carlow

Gavin Doran, a 39-year-old man from Co Carlow, was found guilty by a unanimous jury at Carlow Circuit Court in July 2024 of coercive control, threatening to kill and false imprisonment of his former partner Nicole Nolan, a 34-year-old woman, and pleaded guilty to assault causing harm. The trial heard that Doran hit, bit and head butted Ms Nolan and stuck fingers down her neck on the night of the assault in October 2021, and that their young son witnessed part of the incident. On 15 November 2024, Doran was sentenced to six years in prison, with the sentences for the individual offences running concurrently and the coercive control term running consecutively.
