  • Former garda Paul Moody jailed for harassment and coercive control in Dublin Sexual abuse · Co. Dublin

Paul Moody, 46, a former garda who served 21 years, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in May 2026 to a six-year term with 15 months suspended for harassment and coercive control of his then-partner, an unnamed woman, between March 2016 and November 2017. Moody sent her over 2,200 messages, paced with a knife, and threatened to send intimate images to her employer and former husband. The first victim complained to GSOC in 2017, but the investigation was discontinued with no outcome; Moody was later jailed in 2022 for three years and three months for coercion against his second victim, Nicola Hanney. Fiosrú head Emily Logan said the first investigation was conducted in an unacceptable manner and that a proper inquiry could have stopped the abuse earlier.

In May 2026, Judge Martin Nolan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court sentenced him to six years with the final 15 months suspended, following a 2022 conviction for coercive control of Nicola Hanney for which he served three years and three months.
