On 23 October 2021, gardaí searching a house at Newpark Close, Kilkenny, observed Nicholas Campion using his phone to video the house and officers, and he threw the phone from his car while trying to obstruct a garda from seizing it. On 5 January 2022, Campion opened the back door of a patrol van and escaped from custody while being taken to Kilkenny Garda Station. He was convicted of obstructing a garda carrying out duties under the Misuse of Drugs Act and sentenced to three months in prison. The court noted 80 previous convictions against him, and the October 2021 charge was taken into consideration.
