  • Five teenagers killed in M9 crash under Fiosrú investigation in Kildare Road traffic collision · Co. Kildare

Five teenage boys were killed at about 3am on Sunday 16 August 2026 when the BMW they were travelling in was driven the wrong way down the M9 motorway near Moone, Co Kildare, and collided head-on with a Hyundai carrying four members of the Kinsella family from Carlow who were travelling to Dublin Airport. The five deceased were Alex McCarthy, 17, from Carlow; Joey Carthy, 15, from Athy; Jack Kennedy, 17, from Athy; Kamil Pustkowski, 17, from Limerick; and Jeremy O'Brien, 18. Four people in the Hyundai, sisters Niamh and Alma Kinsella, in their 30s, Ella Hendricken, in her 20s, and a seven-year-old boy, were seriously injured and remain in hospital. Gardaí believe the teenagers had been searching for burglary targets in the Kildare area and that the BMW, purchased for about €1,000 the week before, was driven the wrong way to evade a patrol car that had requested it to stop in Athy at about 2am. The incident has been referred to Fiosrú, the Police Ombudsman, and no arrests or charges have been made.
