Niall Syms, a 70-year-old retired computer expert from Shankill, Co Dublin, was sentenced at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in February 2026 to three years in jail for possession and distribution of child sexual abuse images. Over 55,000 images and videos were found on four devices at his home after Gardaí executed a search warrant following a report from an international child protection agency. Syms pleaded guilty to possession on 3 March 2018 and to distribution between November 2017 and March 2018. Judge Orla Crowe set a headline sentence of six years, or four years per one account, reduced to three years for mitigation and personal circumstances, backdated to 23 January.
