  Niall O'Connor, 42, who worked as a garda in the Tralee area until his suspension in 2021, was charged with possessing GBL, a controlled drug, in a hotel room at the Meadowlands Hotel in Tralee, Co Kerry, on 27 February 2021, and with possession of the same drug for sale or supply. The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission investigated and sent a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed summary disposal in the District Court. A defence application to dismiss on grounds of delay was refused, and the case was adjourned to 5 February 2025. On 5 February 2025 he resigned from the force that morning and pleaded guilty to simple possession after the supply charge was withdrawn. He was given the opportunity to make a €500 contribution to The Grove addiction treatment centre, and if the receipt is handed in on 26 March 2025 the matter will be struck out.
