On 30 June 2022, Niamh McDonnell, a 30-year-old woman from Gortskagh, Castlemahon, struck off-duty Garda Inspector Niall Flood, 53, from behind while he was cycling on the R522 near Dromcollogher, County Limerick, severing his right foot and causing multiple fractures to his spine and ribs. McDonnell did not stop at the scene and drove home, where her partner found the severed foot in the car's front grille. A woman was arrested that night, released without charge in July 2022, and charged with eight offences in December 2022. McDonnell pleaded guilty at Limerick Circuit Court in May 2023 to dangerous driving causing serious bodily harm and drink driving, and in July 2023 to drug driving and failing to stop at the scene. On 24 November 2023, Judge Tom O'Donnell sentenced her to seven years in prison with the final two years suspended and a ten-year driving ban.
