• Supreme Court to hear appeal over presidential nomination process Constitutional challenge (presidential nomination process) · Co. Dublin

Niall Byrne challenged the presidential nomination process in Dublin, claiming Fine Gael leader Simon Harris directed party councillors to block independent candidates. The High Court, before Judge Cregan, dismissed the case in October 2025, ruling the direction was a political directive not subject to court review and that the argument the nomination process is unconstitutional is doomed to failure. A panel of three Supreme Court judges subsequently agreed to hear Byrne's appeal, noting the issue relates only to the nomination process and cannot affect the validity of President Catherine Connolly's election.

Both pleaded guilty at Wexford Circuit Criminal Court, Miller to two counts of endangerment and Byrne to inhumane destruction of an animal and two counts of threatening to kill.
