Neil Browne, an army private with 27 years of service, was convicted in April 2021 in a District Court of several offences relating to the possession of clenbuterol hydrochloride tablets and expired prescription supplements found at his home in 2019. He paid a €1,500 fine and successfully appealed to reduce it to €1,100, but his discharge from the Defence Forces was still recommended on the basis of the criminal conviction.
