Ned Stokes, 61, of Carlow, admitted trying to steal a wallet containing €200 from an 87-year-old man on Patrick Street, Portarlington, on 2 December 2021. The incident was captured on CCTV, and Stokes had 97 previous convictions dating back to 1983. At Portlaoise District Court in June 2022, Judge Patricia Cronin described the offence as shocking and nasty. She imposed a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered €1,000 in compensation.
