Brendan Murray, a 63-year-old man, killed his 88-year-old mother Neasa Murray by punching and choking her at their home in Clontarf, Dublin 3, on 23 August 2020, telling gardaí that God told him to do it. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the murder charge. At his trial at the Central Criminal Court in December 2022, a forensic psychiatrist testified that Murray was in a psychotic episode due to schizoaffective disorder and did not know what he was doing was wrong. A jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity in under 30 minutes, and he was remanded to the Central Mental Hospital until 28 December 2022.
