Natasha O'Brien, an Irish woman aged 24, was punched up to six times in the face and knocked unconscious by Cathal Crotty, an Irish man aged 22, on O'Connell Street in Limerick city centre on 29 May 2022 after she asked him to stop shouting homophobic abuse. Crotty, a serving member of the Defence Forces, was arrested in June 2022 and pleaded guilty to assault causing harm at Limerick Circuit Court in June 2024, receiving a fully suspended three-year sentence. The DPP appealed the sentence as unduly lenient, and the Court of Appeal overturned it in January 2025, imposing a three-year term with the final 12 months suspended, effectively jailing Crotty for two years. He is now due for release from Limerick Prison in July 2026.
