Cases
latest first- Longford couple sentenced for breaking Level 5 restrictions and false statement Breaking Level 5 restrictions; false statement to gardaí · Co. Longford
Joseph and Nancy Lawrence, a couple from Longford with four children under 10, were stopped by Garda Aiden Lenehan at Rathcronan, Granard, just after 1pm on 22 February 2021 during Level 5 lockdown, over 20km from their home. Mr Lawrence told the garda the couple had been visiting a graveyard and that he had stopped at a local garage for petrol, but CCTV showed no evidence of a garage stop and the fuel dial was low. The defence said the couple had travelled to Granardkill Cemetery to visit a family relative's grave and had not left the county. In November 2021, Judge Brennan fined Mr Lawrence €300 and Ms Lawrence €100 on charges of breaking Level 5 restrictions and making a false statement to gardaí, noting as an aggravating factor that Mr Lawrence chose not to address the issue when given the opportunity.
