In August 2021 a teenage girl was sexually assaulted in Athlone while she was out celebrating her Leaving Certificate results. The suspect, Nabil Habbar, is an Algerian former accountant reported as 38 in one account and 41 in another; gardaí arrested him and interviewed him three times. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in November 2023 at Mullingar Circuit Criminal Court to three years and six months, with the final nine months suspended for four years. In 2026 the case was relisted over his probation supervision, the prosecution sought a variation of his probation order, and the judge adjourned ruling on it. The latest development, reported on 3 July 2026, is that Habbar has been deported.
