Mutlu Dalar, a 42-year-old man, was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury in January 2023 of anally raping a woman at her home in Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, on 8 June 2019. The woman, a friend, had invited him for tea that day, and the attack happened in her hallway after he tried to kiss her and she refused. Dalar was arrested in July 2019 and claimed the sexual activity was consensual; he pleaded not guilty, was charged and remanded in custody, and was later released on High Court bail. On 3 March 2023 Justice Tony Hunt sentenced him, with reports differing between an eight-year term with the final year suspended and a seven-year jail term.
