latest first- Burning of Desart Court in Kilkenny in 1923 Arson · Co. Kilkenny
Desart Court, an early Georgian house about five miles from Kilkenny City near the town of Callan, was burnt on the night of February 22, 1923. A group of men demanded entrance at about 10.30pm, and the only occupants were two ladies and an old gardener, Mr Townsend. The burning was supposedly a reprisal, and the sources say homes of Free State Senate members were singled out that night. A special sitting of the District Court later decided the compensation claim, agreeing £124,000 for the building and £6,496 for furniture. No arrests or charges are reported, and the house was finally razed to the ground in 1957.
