Mircea Rostas (also referred to as Marcel Rostas), a Romanian man aged 33 (reports differ: 36) and married father of three, was struck by a car on Railway Street, Balbriggan, just after 9pm on Monday 23 June 2025 and pronounced dead at the scene. The hit-and-run was suspected to be targeted and linked to a feud within the Roma community, and a black saloon car was later abandoned after a collision on Drogheda Street. Daniel Rostas, a Romanian man aged 41 (reports differ: 42) of Hastings Green, Balbriggan, was arrested at 1.12am on 26 June and charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm under Section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act, 1997. He was remanded in custody at Dublin District Court on 26 June to appear at Cloverhill District Court on 3 July for DPP directions. An inquest opened at Dublin District Coroner's Court on 1 March 2026, where it was heard that the accused has been charged with murder on the direction of the DPP, and the inquest was adjourned pending the conclusion of criminal proceedings.
