On 15 April 2021, Michelle O'Leary, a 31-year-old woman (a later report gives her age as 34), pushed in the door of a 90-year-old man's home in a complex for elderly residents in Dublin, produced a knife, demanded money, took €60 from his pocket and left after pretending to be a garda. In March 2021, O'Leary and a co-accused had visited a 69-year-old neighbour, pushed past him into his home, demanded €100 and suggested walking to a nearby ATM, but the shop manager kicked them out and called the Garda. O'Leary was arrested at her mother's apartment, made admissions in interview, and pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to aggravated burglary, production of a knife, making a statement to suggest she was a member of An Garda Síochána, burglary, attempted robbery and false imprisonment. In February 2022, she was sentenced to seven years with 12 months suspended on strict conditions, having been on remand in custody since her arrest.
