  Michael Toland, a man in his 80s, died at the scene after being struck by a van while crossing the road near his home at Annaugh, Clonmany, Co Donegal, on 18 September 2024. Danny Hirrell, 51, of Cloontagh, Clonmany, was charged with careless driving causing death and with possessing an unregistered vehicle. Judge Emile Daly at Carndonagh District Court refused jurisdiction because the maximum penalty was twelve months and returned Hirrell for trial at Letterkenny Circuit Court, where the case is due at the next sitting commencing May 5. Hirrell was remanded on continuing bail.
