  In April 2023 Michael O'Connell, a 48-year-old man of Oak Crescent, Newcastle West, appeared at Newcastle West District Court before Judge John King, where his solicitor sought an adjournment in a case whose current charges were not outlined. The court heard he had 16 bench warrants for not attending court in the previous twelve months, seven of them relating to the case before the court and the rest to matters already finalised before another court. Judge King refused bail, saying he did not believe the man would attend if released, and remanded him in custody until 18 May 2023, when the case is to be heard by Judge Carol Ann Coolican because the regular Newcastle West judge has an ongoing interest in it.

  Michael O'Connell, 46, of Newcastlewest, Limerick, was arrested at Portlaoise train station on 16 December 2021 after becoming heavily intoxicated on a train from Limerick to Dublin, brandishing a broken bottle, and being threatening and abusive towards station staff. He also spat on the rear of a patrol car and at gardai when he was arrested. He appeared at Portlaoise District Court on 10 June 2022, where the defence cited medical issues and heavy medication as contributing factors. The judge fixed bail and adjourned the case to 7 July 2022, requiring him to bring €232 to pay a cleaning bill.
