  On 22 May 2023, Ross Culligan, then just over 18, allegedly assaulted Michael Neylon, a man in his 60s, at a protest in Scool, Corofin, Co Clare, against a rumoured new accommodation centre for asylum seekers. The protest was organised via social media in response to false claims about asylum seeker housing at the location, and no such plans existed. Culligan was charged with assault causing harm under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act and pleaded guilty at Ennis District Court in January 2025. Judge Alec Gabbett adjourned sentencing to September 2025, directing Culligan to bring his June Leaving Cert results to court.
