In the early hours of 1 November 2021, a 20-year-old woman was raped, orally raped and sexually assaulted in a laneway in Waterford while being walked home from a pub. Michael Molloy, 22 at the time and a student at Waterford Institute of Technology, was found guilty by unanimous jury verdicts at the Central Criminal Court in Waterford in February 2025. On 18 March 2025, he was sentenced to five years' imprisonment after the judge set a headline sentence of seven years, reduced it to six, and suspended the final year on conditions including three years' Probation Service supervision. Molloy, who has no previous convictions, maintains his innocence and does not accept the jury verdicts.

Michael Molloy, 25, a college student from Creagh Demesne, Gorey, Co Wexford, was jailed for five years after being found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting a 20-year-old woman in a laneway in the early hours of 1 November 2021. Molloy, who was 22 at the time, was arrested and denied the charges, telling gardaí the encounter was consensual. A unanimous jury at the Central Criminal Court in Waterford in February 2025 found him guilty of one count of rape, one count of oral rape and one count of sexual assault. Mr Justice Paul Burns sentenced him to five years' imprisonment on 18 March 2025, reducing the DPP's recommended category of seven to 10 years. Molloy maintains his innocence and does not accept the verdicts.
