William Sydney Clements, the 3rd Earl of Leitrim, was shot 10 to 11 times and struck on the head with the butt of a gun on the morning of 2 April 1878 while on his way to Milford in Donegal. Three men, Michael Heraghty, Michael McElwee and Nial Sheils, were named as the gunmen who lay in wait armed with muzzle-loading guns. Many people knew who the gunmen were but did not inform the police, and all three returned to their jobs as normal. Heraghty was the only one ever arrested, and he died of typhus fever in jail without ever being charged with murder. A £10,000 reward offered by the victim's heir for information identifying the killers was never collected.
